A Modern Guide to SCA Offices

The SCA is dedicated to 'recreating' various aspects of pre-17th-century history. The organization of the SCA is often referred to as the 'Current Middle Ages'. What this means is that the organization is modern while at the same time incorporating elements from the Middle Ages into its structure.

The main way the SCA incorporates the Middle Ages into its group management structure is by utilizing historical terms for its offices and officers. The offices and officers have different names than you will find in 21st Century organizations, but their responsibility areas are basically the same. Anyone who understands the functions of various parts of a modern organization merely needs to understand what the SCA office or officer's equivalent is in modern terminology.

Following is a chart of SCA offices and officers along with the heraldic symbols associated with them and their correlation to parts of modern organizations.

Office Officer Modern Equivalent Organizational Function

The Baron and Baroness of a Barony are not actually officers of the group. They are representatives of the Crown. They are very much like the 21st Century royalty in England.
